BASEES Anti-Harassment Policy and Code of Conduct regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine:
The BASEES 2026 conference is dedicated to providing a harassment-free experience for everyone, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, physical appearance, nationality, citizenship, race, or religion. As an academic gathering, the conference promotes engagement, collaboration, and the understanding of a broad range of viewpoints, all underpinned by our shared values of scholarly rigor, collegiality, and mutual respect. We do not tolerate harassment of participants or staff in any form.
In response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and representation made by our community, BASEES, ASEEES and AATSEEL issued joint statements: Firstly, a Joint Statement of Opposition to Banning Scholars Based on Citizenship, and secondly, a Joint Statement Condemning Russian University Presidents’ Statement of Support for Russia’s Assault on Ukraine. These statements, along with translations in Ukrainian and Russian, can be found on the BASEES website.
In line with the above, we have adopted the following policy for the forthcoming BASEES 2026 conference:
– Sessions of the conference or any part of the venue must not be used as a platform for agitation, propaganda, or activities that support war, conflict, or genocidal ideas in relation to Russia’s war against Ukraine or any other war and conflict.
– Students and scholars based in Russia or Belarus will participate in a personal capacity.
